Why I’m So Excited About Honkai: Star Rail’s New Leaked Characters (& Why You Should Be Too)
Summary New characters in Honkai: Star Rail are rumored to focus on HP-loss mechanics, shifting away from follow-up attacks.
Leaks suggest future Destruction characters will use Blade as their base, with HP as their main stats.
Embracing HP-loss mechanics promises exciting new gameplay possibilities and potential for unique team comps, but there are risks.
Even with the lack of more specific details, the two new leaked characters from Honkai: Star Rail seem extremely exciting to me, especially given my history with some of the previous units they allegedly base themselves on. Currently, the turn-based RPG by HoYoverse is in Version 2.4, but as it progresses into the update, leaks about future content, including Version 2.5 and beyond, are starting to emerge. The characters from Version 2.5, Feixiao, Lingsha, and Moze have already had most of their details leaked. Lingsha, for instance, seemingly has the potential to become the best healer in Honkai: Star Rail.
Feixiao, on the other hand, is expected to be a new follow-up attack specialist, and Moze is also rumored to excel in this sort of combat. At the moment, a lot of the new characters’ focus has been on follow-up attacks, a mechanic that has been gaining importance and growing in possibilities with the releases of characters like Robin, Jade, and Yunli in Honkai: Star Rail, for example. However, new leaks about two future characters indicate the game will sway away from follow-up attacks and shift back into one of the best combat mechanics so far, which is particularly exciting.

Leaks Indicate The Characters Will Arrive After Version 3.0
Close
According to new information by the leaker known as Ubatcha, which was shared in a post tagged as “Questionable” on Reddit, two new Destruction characters are expected to be released following Version 3.0. The leak mentions that one of them uses Quantum DMG, while the other uses Imaginary DMG. The rumored Quantum character uses SPD and HP as their main stats, whereas the Imaginary unit focuses solely on HP. As was mentioned by the leaker, both of these characters use Blade as their base and will likely use HP-loss mechanics in battle, indicating the return of the classic gameplay style.
The leak was sustained by information provided by the leaker HomDGCat in a now-deleted post on Reddit, too, which also mentioned the future Destruction characters in Honkai: Star Rail using HP-loss.
Leaked Destruction Characters In Honkai: Star Rail Use HP-Loss
The Combat Mechanic Has Proven Successful In The Past
The alleged shift away from follow-up attacks and back into HP-loss mechanics is especially enticing. While follow-up attacks are very strong, even more so with recent and future releases, HP-loss already has a very good reputation. The high-risk, high-reward structure of characters actively consuming their own HP tends to result in massive damage output, as exemplified by Blade and Jingliu. In fact, these were some of the best units in my roster of characters until the somewhat recent release of Acheron – Blade had been my main DPS in Honkai: Star Rail for nearly an entire year.

For now, HP-loss is quite simple in the game. The few characters that use it tend to consume their own HP or the HP of their allies to increase their own damage output. However, this type of mechanic can be significantly deepened and explored in more creative ways with the release of the leaked Destruction characters. Instead of simply consuming HP to augment power, these new characters could use their own HP to trigger new types of effects that give more depth to their gameplay style. If HP-loss is set to make a comeback, I’m sure it’ll be in new creative ways.
This should be particularly exciting to players since it could open up a whole new avenue of team comp possibilities. The game is constantly expanding its gameplay mechanics. A new Honkai: Star Rail 2.5 leak hints at changes to the gameplay structure to now consider where certain characters are positioned within the lineup of the team comp, for example. The only concern that I have with this leak is that older HP-loss characters will get powercrept by future releases and fall into complete disuse across all game modes.

Of course, for now, the leak should be taken with caution. Information about Version 3.0 and beyond is still highly subject to change and could be completely wrong. Nevertheless, the mere prospect of the game returning to one of its most solid combat mechanics after a good run with follow-up attacks sounds particularly enticing and, if these characters live up to Blade’s good reputation in my team comps, I’m sure I’ll want to pull for them in Honkai: Star Rail – and so should you.
