I Don’t Know What To Expect From Power Rangers’ Next Show (& That’s Exciting)
Summary Power Rangers may break its formula after 30 years by venturing into original productions.
Power Rangers has faced transitions and hiatuses before.
The future of Power Rangers should hopefully involve different formats beyond the traditional TV series.
I do not know what Power Rangers’ next show will be, and that is actually exciting. 2024 marked the first year since 2009 that Power Rangers did not release a new season, which was expected considering the lack of updates regarding the next TV show after Power Rangers Cosmic Fury’s ending. While a hiatus can be worrying, I believe Power Rangers can benefit from this period of uncertainty and come back stronger. That said, finding a new path for Power Rangers after 30 years of Super Sentai adaptations will not be easy.
The Power Rangers chronology consists of 973 episodes, three theatrical movies, one TV special, and hundreds of comic book issues. While not all of those stories take place in the same continuity, Power Rangers has somewhat adhered to the same canon since 1993. There has never been a significant Power Rangers reboot outside of the 2017 movie, which is impressive given the history of other superhero franchises like Marvel and DC. On the one hand, Power Rangers avoiding a reboot has helped maintain the franchise’s identity. On the other hand, now may be the time to change.

Power Rangers May Finally Break Free Of Its Formula

For three decades, Power Rangers has used the same release strategy. Starting with Mighty Morphin in 1993, there was a new Power Rangers season almost every year. Mighty Morphin, the original Power Rangers show, was the only one to run for three seasons. After the Rangers entered their Zeo era, Power Rangers started to cover one Super Sentai series per year. In other words, the show would now change its title and costumes every season, which, as a fan, I always found exciting. While this made MMPR more special in hindsight, it allowed Power Rangers to start over every year.
Season Release Year Mighty Morphin 1993 Zeo 1996 Turbo 1997 In Space 1998 Lost Galaxy 1999 Lightspeed Rescue 2000 Time Force 2001 Wild Force 2002 Ninja Storm 2003 Dino Thunder 2004 S.P.D. 2005 Mystic Force 2006 Operation Overdrive 2007 Jungle Fury 2008 R.P.M. 2009 Samurai/Super Samurai 2011 Megaforce/Super Megaforce 2013 Dino Charge/Super Dino Charge 2015 Ninja Steel/ Super Ninja Steel 2017 Beast Morphers 2019 Dino Fury 2021 Cosmic Fury 2023
After Power Rangers in Space, continuity became even less important for the show as every season would now be truly standalone stories with little to no connections to previous teams. For decades, it was easy to predict what the next Power Rangers series was going to be like simply based on what the latest Sentai season had been. Power Rangers recently started to take more creative liberties regarding the Sentai adaptations, such as skipping seasons or only using Japanese footage for Megazord battles like in Cosmic Fury. Still, it never abandoned its formula.
Super Sentai is part of Power Rangers’ DNA, and any deviation from that would be very unpredictable.
Power Rangers may now be facing its biggest change since the start of the franchise. With no updates regarding a new Super Sentai adaptation, it can be assumed that the franchise’s next TV project will be an original production rather than a localized version of another show. I would be interested to see what an all-original Power Rangers series would look like, even though moving away from Sentai would be a major change for the franchise. Super Sentai is part of Power Rangers’ DNA, and any deviation from that would be very unpredictable.
Power Rangers Has Faced Hiatuses & Delays Before
This Isn’t The First Period Of Transition For Power Rangers
In 2010, the only new piece of Power Rangers content for television was Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (Re-Version). A very divisive release, MMPR Re-Version was a re-edited version of the original series with new visual effects and a different opening sequence. Power Rangers was moving from Disney to Saban, which is why there was not a new season in 2010. 2009’s Power Rangers R.P.M. marked the end of an era, whereas 2011’s Power Rangers Samurai was the beginning of a new one. Still, there was not much of a change between R.P.M and Samurai.
MMPR Re-Version was not very well-received, with many pointing as a pointless release.
What Should Power Rangers’ Future Be After Cosmic Fury?
Power Rangers Could Use A Reboot, Regardless Of The Format

According to TV Line, the Power Rangers reboot show that had been in development for a while is no longer moving forward at Netflix. While the report also mentions that the project is expected to continue with a new creative partner, it is difficult to predict where the show will go. A more traditional Power Rangers season 31 in the style of Cosmic Fury cannot be ruled out, but I would prefer the franchise to use this period of transition to try something new. This includes a potential reboot of the TV show.

While I would love for Power Rangers to return to the big screen after the underrated 2017 movie sadly bombed at the box office, I believe the future of the saga currently lies in television. Power Rangers has a lot of untapped potential despite having been on TV almost uninterruptedly for 30 years. For example, there has yet to be an animated Power Rangers series. Additionally, the comics have shown that even Mighty Morphin, which has always been the face of the franchise, can be reinvented into something fresh and exciting.
