Star Wars Has Set Up One Massive Baby Yoda Problem That Could Completely Undermine The Mandalorian Movie

Summary Grogu's storyline in The Mandalorian foreshadows his ability to start speaking soon.

Grogu's cuteness will diminish as he starts talking, changing viewer perceptions.

The challenge for The Mandalorian & Grogu movie is to let Grogu speak without losing his adorable appeal.

Ahead of the upcoming movie The Mandalorian & Grogu, Star Wars has set up a storyline for Grogu (Baby Yoda) in The Mandalorian that could prove problematic to the character's future. Grogu's fond nickname of "Baby Yoda" alone embodies much of the reason why he's become one of Star Wars' best characters. The adorable factor of Grogu's character keeps viewers coming back time and time again, especially when it enhances moments in the heartfelt relationship between him and his adoptive father, Din Djarin.

This cuteness factor has essentially become the basis of his character. Many general audiences still know Grogu solely by the name "Baby Yoda" rather than his actual name, with The Mandalorian characters even referencing in-universe how ridiculous they think the name Grogu is for the little green guy. Grogu's actions have largely spoken for him in the absence of his voice ever since The Mandalorian's first episodes, proving early on how much he cares for his father and their allies - but this could all change very soon.

The Mandalorian season 3 had a linear storyline for Grogu that foreshadowed him being able to speak soon. It was, arguably, one of Grogu's biggest conflicts in season 3 that he could not speak. Upon finding Bo-Katan Kryze to get help for his father, Grogu himself couldn't explain what had happened, and it was outright stated later on that Grogu couldn't become a Mandalorian apprentice until he could speak and swear the Creed. Though there was a loophole around this that has since allowed Grogu to become his father's apprentice, Grogu's still been set up to start speaking soon.

Grogu's attempts at speaking in The Mandalorian season 3 are evidence of this. Grogu nearly said "This is the Way" to Din and Bo-Katan in season 3, episode 3 "Chapter 19: The Convert," and in one of the season's final scenes, it sounded like Grogu nearly said "dad" when calling for his father's attention. This is an exciting prospect, but unfortunately, it could cause a big problem for both Grogu and his Star Wars future.

Grogu's Cute "Baby" Factor Will Fade As He Starts Talking

Grogu's Evident Signs Of Growth Will Change The Way People See Him

The reality is that Grogu's biggest appeal as a character at the moment is his adorableness, and the fact that he's "Baby Yoda." The moment Grogu starts speaking, then, that cuteness starts to fade, because it proves that he's growing and is no longer the adorable baby everyone met in The Mandalorian's premiere. It's an unfortunate but true reality; with his character being based so strongly on the fact he's a baby version of Yoda's species, Grogu's growth away from his baby stage will change the way viewers think about and see him.

They can, however, find a way to let Grogu speak and still maintain his adorable identity.

This could potentially be troublesome for the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu movie. Seeing as The Mandalorian season 3 has foreshadowed Grogu speaking, there's really no getting around it. They can, however, find a way to let Grogu speak and still maintain his adorable identity. Letting Grogu say the word "dad" in reference to Din Djarin will achieve that awww effect, letting Grogu speak without pushing things too far. Though it should be an exciting prospect to see Grogu speaking in The Mandalorian & Grogu, Star Wars may have to hold back on it as long as they can.

The Mandalorian & Grogu hits theaters May 22, 2026.
