Xbox Game Pass Is Getting A Day-One Remake Of An Iconic Game September 4
Summary Age of Mythology: Retold will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one, offering a new remake of an iconic strategy game.
The game features a rich campaign with 50 missions spanning Greek, Norse, Egyptian, and Atlantean myths, along with PvP and PvE multiplayer.
While the standard edition is included with Game Pass, a Premium Edition with additional content and early access is available for purchase.
Day-One additions are one of the best parts of Xbox Game Pass, with new games launching free for subscribers at the same time as they become more widely available to buy. This selling point has become increasingly central to the identity of the service over time, and considering recent Game Pass price increases, that leverage might now be more important than ever before. Luckily, one September day-one addition could be well-worth the cost to strategy fans, bringing a new remake of an iconic game to the service.
As noted on its Xbox store page, Age of Mythology: Retold is set to arrive on Xbox Game Pass on its release day of September 4, 2024. This real-time strategy game brings back a classic Age of Empires spin-off that never got a sequel despite widespread acclaim. Unlike the somewhat historically grounded nature of Age of Empires, Age of Mythology leans into the power of gods and monsters from ancient and classical pantheons, making for an interesting twist on typical tactical gameplay.

A big selling point of Age of Mythology has always been its campaign, which is bundled with content from the original DLCs to amount to a whopping 50 missions in Age of Mythology: Retold. With Greek, Norse, and Egyptian myths and cultures represented alongside the Atlanteans of legend, missions cover a wide variety of scenarios and locations that keep things from getting stale. Multiplayer is also part of the appeal, however, with both PvP and PvE options and randomly generated scenarios to provide long-standing entertainment.
The version of Age of Mythology: Retold that's included with Xbox Game Pass is the standard edition, which otherwise retails for a relatively modest $29.99. Superfans can opt to buy a Premium Edition for $49.99 that grants a couple of content packs, access to a couple of future expansions, and 7-day early access (which does arguably add an asterick to the day one claim of the Xbox Game Pass release). There's also a $24.99 upgrade to the Premium edition, which should be possible to use with the free Game Pass release.

Age of Mythology: Retold has a strong legacy to live up to, but it looks like the project is treating the classic game with respect, so it should be a good time as long as it's technically sound. Xbox Game Pass subscribers with an interest in real-time strategy games should definitely check this one out, and even those who aren't well-versed in the genre could do a lot worse when picking a starting point. For long-time Age of Mythology fans, this could very well be one of the most exciting Xbox Game Pass releases of the year.
