An Iconic Action Game May Finally Be Getting A Sequel After Over Half A Decade
Summary The Darksiders series may be getting a sequel featuring Strife, the only Horseman yet to have his own game.
Strife specializes in firearms, setting him apart from the melee-based gameplay of other Horsemen.
A potential sequel could introduce co-op gameplay, expanding on unresolved storylines from the previous games.
It has been over five years since a mainline title in the Darksiders series was released, but after a new CG teaser trailer recently dropped, the iconic hack-and-slash series is back. There's no telling what this CG teaser is actually for and whether it will be for another mainline title, which would be Darksiders 4, or another spin-off in the same vein as Darksiders Genesis, a top-down take on the game that featured two-player co-op. Although the series has been dormant for a while, it is once again an exciting time to be a Darksiders fan.
Although relatively iconic within the hack-and-slash sphere, the Darksiders franchise has never hit the mainstream in the same way other titles like Devil May Cry and, especially, God of War have. Still, the franchise has earned its fair share of loyal fans thanks to its strong core premise of playing as one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Pair this with well-done and intriguing world-building, dynamic, flashy gameplay, and a stylized aesthetic, and it's easy to see why there is so much love for Darksiders.

Darksiders May Finally Be Getting A Sequel
It Could Be Strife's Time To Shine
Close
Darksiders has a strong premise in which players typically play one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, which are War, Death, Wrath, and Strife. Curiously, the first title is the latest game in the timeline, provided that the prologue is ignored since there is a one-hundred-year time gap after that. Within those one hundred years in which War is imprisoned for triggering the Apocalypse and causing a war, which one would think is all in his job description, the next two games take place, allowing players to control Death and Wrath.

Although he was playable in the Darksiders Genesis spin-off, which is also a prequel, Strife is the only member of the Horsemen not to receive a title in which he is in the sole starring role. War, Death, and Wrath have all had their time to shine alone, but the teaser could be a sequel in which Strife is the core protagonist. It would be a safe bet, with the game possibly taking place within the one hundred years War is imprisoned — since a century is a long time and gives the developer a lot to work with.
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are not always consistent between different media, with the Bible having Conquest, War, Famine, and Death.
Strife is different from the other Four Horsemen in that he specializes in firearms, while the other three all have melee weapons, as would be expected of a hack-and-slash game. If his gameplay from Genesis is anything to go by, he is agile but will be something vastly different from the other Horsemen. He's also witty, firing a number of one-liners, while the other Horsemen that have had the starring role thus far are reasonably self-serious, which could also alter the tone of the game too.

What The Darksiders Sequel Could Be
Co-op Could Make A Roaring Return
Gunfire Games could ultimately decide to take the franchise beyond the first title for once, which could still star Strife. It could also be a co-op adventure, as Darksiders' ending is a cliffhanger in which War calls upon the other Horsemen to come to his aid, and they are seen as comets of differing colors racing across the sky. This has been something that fans of the series have wanted for a while, and Darksiders Genesis could have been a template for this since both War and Strife are playable together.
In Darksiders, the Horsemen are the last of the Nephilim, a now-extinct race born from a union of Angels and Demons.
With its biblical setting of angels and demons warring against one another and the rise of hack-and-slash games, with the likes of Stellar Blade, Hi-Fi Rush, and the upcoming Black Myth: Wukong, this could be the perfect time for a new Darksiders. There's no telling what exactly the teaser is for and when the game will specifically take place, but another strong entry with the hack-and-slash gameplay of a cult classic would generate interest. Whether it is a sequel or a spin-off, a new Darksiders is a good sign for the iconic game series.
There are a few options as to where the series can go, too, so a new entry wouldn't feel forced. A game starring Strife during War's one-hundred-year imprisonment would be a safe bet for Darksiders 4, or the franchise could go where none of the other games have gone beyond the timeline of its first game. The new game could even be a spin-off, like Genesis, in which the perspective changes, but all-in-all, it's a good thing that Darksiders is back.
