Five Nights At Freddy's 2 Filming Start Month Confirmed By Matthew Lillard

Summary Matthew Lillard reveals that Five Nights at Freddy's 2 starts filming in October.

The first movie earned mostly negative reviews from critics but was a box office hit for Blumhouse.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will feature the return of key creatives from the first film, setting it up for success.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 star Matthew Lillard reveals when filming starts on the sequel. Based on the hit video game franchise, the first Five Night's At Freddy's movie was released theatrically last year, following Josh Hutcherson's security guard, Mike, as he takes a job at a pizzaria where animatronic mascots come to life at night and attempt to murder anyone inside. The film was a major hit for Blumhouse, and Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is now confirmed to be on the way with a release date set for next year.

During a recent interview on the JayBee & Milly YouTube channel, Lillard is asked a separate question about his willingness to return for a future Scooby-Doo movie, but he reveals when production gets underway for Five Nights at Freddy's 2 during his answer.

While the actor doesn't give away any details about the sequel's story or characters, he does definitively reveal that filming will begin in October. Read his brief comment below:

Will Five Nights At Freddy's 2 Repeat The First Movie's Success?

What To Expect From The Blumhouse Sequel

Anticipation was high for the Five Nights at Freddy's movie last year due to the popularity of the video game and the film's long development process. Five Nights at Freddy's reviews were generally quite negative right out of the gate, however, and the film currently has only a lackluster 32% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics took issue with the fact that the film wasn't really all that scary, and that it prioritizes an abundance of video game Easter eggs over telling a compelling story.

The audience reception to Five Nights at Freddy's, on the other hand, was much more positive. In addition to boasting a strong 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film was a box office smash hit, grossing $291.5 million worldwide on an estimated budget of only $20 million. The film currently stands as Blumhouse's highest-grossing movie worldwide, and it accomplished this impressive box office feat despite releasing on Peacock the same day it hit theaters.

With key Five Nights at Freddy's cast members like Hutcherson, Lillard, and Elizabeth Lail all expected to return alongside director Emma Tammi, a number of important ingredients are already in place for another win. If the sequel can double down on scares and improve its actual storytelling, it could see similar levels of success, especially since it will presumably not be releasing day-and-date on Peacock. With Five Nights at Freddy's 2 filming set to start this fall, it's likely more news about the sequel will emerge in the coming months.
