At the moment, a lot of the story details about the Nation of Pyro in HoYoverse’s action RPG are still very blurry and open for interpretation and discovery, but there are heavy rumors that, despite Mavuika’s leading status in Natlan, she is not the true Pyro Sovereign, even if she is the Archon. For reference, Mavuika is one of the new Natlan characters in Genshin Impact, revealed a few weeks ago by the developer.

According to a new piece of information by Team Mew, which was shared in a post on Reddit, the Pyro Sovereign from Natlan underwent a name change ahead of its debut in Version 5.0. The leak mentions that the character that had been referred to as Xolotl in several Natlan leaks is now called Xiuhcoatl. While the new rumored name is still of Aztec origin, it may shine some light onto what players can expect in terms of design and even its essence in Genshin Impact.

For reference, Xolotl is the Aztec deity of fire and lightning, which would somewhat match a Pyro Sovereign’s powers. However, Xolotl is depicted as a man with a canine head. On the other hand, Xiuhcoatl is an Aztec creature in the form of a serpent. This creature is also considered a fire serpent. If the name change is true, it makes perfect sense to represent the Pyro Sovereign in the game. This is because the original elemental Sovereigns in Genshin Impact, before their powers were stolen to create the Thrones of the Archons, were dragons.

In Sumeru, for instance, Apep, who once ruled the region as its Sovereign, is a large worm-like dragon creature. In Fontaine, the Hydro Dragon Neuvillette reconquered the status of Hydro Sovereign after Focalors sacrificed herself to save the people of Fontaine and avoid punishment from the Heavenly Principles for defying them. While Neuvillette retains his human form he is, at his core, a Hydro Dragon, now imbued with the power of the Hydro Sovereign. This could mean that the Pyro Sovereign from Natlan is also a dragon of sorts, even if Mavuika retains its elemental powers in Genshin Impact.

The Pyro Sovereign, in fact, could have appeared off-screen in the Natlan character teaser. Near the end of the video, Mavuika is shown entering a dark chamber and talking to someone inside. While they are not shown, it is quite possible this character is Xiuhcoatl, the Pyro Sovereign. The rumored name change could be a way of honoring the original Aztec name. Of course, the game is currently being accused of cultural appropriation and whitewashing due to the designs of the characters from Natlan.

Players mention that HoYoverse is using cultural names without adequately representing them in terms of racial diversity.

The leak should be considered with caution, as the rumored Pyro Sovereign is not even yet confirmed to exist within the Nation of Pyro. Additionally, the name change could be incorrect or subject to more changes ahead of its debut, in Version 5.0 or beyond. Of course, there is a chance that it will be mentioned by name with the release of Natlan in Genshin Impact, especially if the Pyro Sovereign plays an important role in the main story quests.
