Mayor of Kingstown's message of no one being safe now impacts even Kyle, who up until that moment was spared thanks to Mariam, Mike and Tracy.
The shocking developments of Mayor of Kingstown season 3’s ending put Kyle in a predicament that will be difficult for Mike to make disappear, but the direction Kyle’s story was going toward was already hinted at by Mayor of Kingstown season 2. The planned confrontation between Bunny’s Crips and Konstantin’s men already took Mike’s complete attention in Mayor of Kingstown season 3’s finale. However, Milo’s resurfacing and his threats against Konstantin and especially Iris made Mike’s day impossibly challenging, pulling his attention away from the plan in progress and KPD’s likely involvement so that Mike could direct it toward Milo.
Although he didn’t have to balance the Kingstown gangs’ demands, Kyle’s situation wasn’t the best by Mayor of Kingstown season 3’s ending. Indeed, Kyle was coming to terms with Tracy’s refusal to involve him in her problems with CO Breens and how it changed his contribution to their family. In addition, his frequent spats with Robert, and especially their last exchange about Mike and Evelyn even led Kyle to think Robert chose him to be part of KPD’s SWAT only so that he could have leverage against Mike. Such a background contributes to Kyle’s spur-of-the-moment decision to shoot at Robert.

Kyle Was Twitching To Act In Season 2 & It Was His Bullet That Killed Mariam

The birth of baby Mitch grounded Kyle in Mayor of Kingstown season 3, making him want to switch to SWAT because he wanted to protect his family. Kyle’s transfer made him see how important it was for the job to be done correctly, even noticing how Robert was often unequipped for it, using excessive force and sometimes completely missing cues that could have killed him. While Kyle’s arrest was inevitable after he shot Robert to stop him from killing innocents in Mayor of Kingstown season 3’s finale, Mayor of Kingstown season 2 already hinted that tragedy was coming for Kyle.
From proclamations of support for Robert against the IA investigation, to taking Milo’s bonds from the precinct’s holding to help Mike, to a wish to be more part of Mike’s job as mayor, there were various hints that Kingstown could easily corrupt Kyle. Even the fact that it was his bullet to hit Mariam, putting her in the hospital and eventually killing her in season 3, showed that Kyle was close to breaking down, but Mike and Ian helped him through. Still, Mike, Mariam and Tracy always looking out for Kyle nonetheless only delayed the moment Kingstown’s corruption burdened Kyle.
Kyle’s new role as part of the SWAT team made him see up close how Robert wasn’t hundred percent, making his reinstatement as part of the team an oversight that could cost even more characters their lives.

After setting up Mitch in his role as mayor, Mayor of Kingstown brutally killed him off in the series premiere. Such a choice so early in the series should have made clear to the viewers how no character was off-limits, but Mayor of Kingstown continued to make the same point often. Indeed, while season 1 didn’t have any more deaths of someone so close to Mike, Mayor of Kingstown season 2’s ending put Mariam in harm’s way, wounding her to the point that season 3’s premiere confirmed her death.
With Iris and Kareem’s deaths, even Mayor of Kingstown season 3’s ending continued to pass on the same message, that no matter how close characters were to Mike, trying to survive Kingstown eventually caused them to succumb to it in one way or another. Even Evelyn’s investigation into the connection between Ian and Charlie and Morrissey’s murder risks Ian’s career and freedom. Kyle was the only character that Mayor of Kingstown spared up until season 3’s finale, but given how public his misdeed was, it’s unlikely that a potential Mayor of Kingstown season 4 will let his transgression slide.
