Cat Quest 3 Final Boss & Ending Explained (In Detail)

Summary Cat Quest 3 features multiple endings based on defeating Pirate Lords and one other factor.

The North Star, a dangerous artifact, leads to an ominous final boss battle.

The mysterious Aelius connects every Cat Quest game.

Cat Quest 3 not only tells a tale of a pirate cat and its spirit friend seeking a legendary treasure but also has a much deeper meaning for the series as a whole. Although each game thus far has had a standalone ending, this time, developers are doing something a bit different and showing how the timelines converge. This adventure game has everything from sailing the seas, delving into the dungeons, and searching out lost treasure, but all might not be what it seems.

[Warning: This article contains massive spoilers for the ending of Cat Quest 3.] There are multiple endings to Cat Quest 3, which is one good reason why players may want to keep playing in New Game+ after beating the game, but only one ending is the good, true ending. The true ending is the version that will be discussed in this article, and therefore, it may be different from a player's experience if they took a different path. Although the game does end on an ominous note, this ending wraps things up much more meaningfully than some of the other versions may do.

Cat Quest 3 Has Multiple Endings

Depending On How Many Pirate Lords Are Defeated & Something Else

Close

Because of the open-world nature of Cat Quest 3 and the mechanic of being able to level up armor and weapons, it is possible to skip over several portions of the game and head straight to the boss. This would require quite a bit of grinding to earn money for the upgrades, but it is entirely doable. Additionally, in New Game+, this can be done very quickly, depending on where the player is at when they start the new game. This could be great fun for speedrunners, but it also led developers to create many endings based on what is done during the game.

Early on, developers for the game said that Cat Quest 3 has a pirate fantasy that offers a story of hope and family. This theme is somewhat subtle through much of the story, but becomes apparent in the end.

At the time of writing, it currently has not been revealed just how many endings there are for Cat Quest 3. Developers have stated that the deciding factor for which ending will be triggered is based on how many of the Pirate Lords are defeated before the final boss, as well as "one more contributing factor" that is not explained. The ongoing hints in the game regarding varied timelines lead to the true ending, featuring a point where the main character is told that they could be getting the good ending.

The North Star Is Not What It Seems

This Artifact Was Hidden By Seekers For A Reason

Close

Throughout the game, the protagonist is seeking out the legendary North Star. As the only living Seeker with the mark to prove it, they alone hold the power to unlock the path to this magical artifact that can grant the greatest desires of someone's heart. As they travel, the hero is faced with fighting the Wardens Of The North Star. These ghostly beings are all Seekers of old who long ago had sealed away the North Star so that nobody would harness its power.

While the North Star is made out to sound as though it is an object or perhaps a trinket, nobody truly knows what it is. The Seekers who sealed it away left pillars that can help guide another Seeker to it, however, and so the Cat, as well as many unsavory enemies, follow these clues on the path. One would think that at some point, the Cat and others, perhaps, should have thought about why these good Seekers had gone to so much trouble to seal away the power of the North Star, but that never crosses anyone's mind. After defeating the Seekers-turned-Wardens, the door leading to the North Star is revealed.

Final Boss Fight In Cat Quest 3

And The Pi-Rat King's Revelation

Close

Once players reach the room deep in the Zero Dimension where The North Star is imprisoned, The North Star is revealed to be a massive monster floating in the sky, with one large eyeball and sharp teeth to go along with its prideful attitude. The Pi-Rat King shows up to take the power for himself, which leads to The North Star encouraging the two to fight over it.

Once the player has defeated the Pi-Rat King, the King's minions, Squeaky and Clean, show up and tell the Pi-Rat King that they will take care of him and how much he means to them. They leave together, happily, as the King realizes that The North Star is not what they originally thought and warns the Cat to be on guard. The King sees that this legendary artifact is truly an evil entity, but unfortunately, it may be too late for the Cat and Captain Cappey.

The North Star pressures the Cat to help make him a god and even goes so far as to tell Captain Cappey that it can restore his health and make him live, but that the price to do so would be the Cat for its Dragonblood Seeker abilities. When Cappey refuses, he dies, and the Cat enters the final boss fight against The North Star, not to gain the artifact's power anymore, but simply to survive as The North Star wants to use the Seeker power.

After the fight is over, the mysterious dancing creature that appeared at various times in the game shows up and congratulates the Cat on successfully defeating The North Star and returning it to its original form. He explains that The North Star grew into a grotesque massive monster by feeding on mortal desires and the power it gained through them.

Who Aelius Is In The Cat Quest Series

All Games Are Part Of The Same Overarching Story

Close

Aelius has appeared in every Cat Quest game and is the link that ties them all together. He is a human that was once one of the Old Masters. Aelius was locked inside of the Zero Dimension by the rest of the Old Masters; however, after he created the Dragonblood by infusing some of the cats with Dragon magic. Through using others, including the evil Drakoth, Aelius seems to be concocting a master plan while trapped away in his infinite prison.

In the first Cat Quest, he also guided Drakoth to trick the protagonist into getting stronger, knowing that a death of a particularly powerful Dragonblood would be needed to free Aelius from the Zero Dimension. Aelius was the one who corrupted King Lioner and King Wolfen, leading to the war between cats and dogs, and was the final boss of Cat Quest 2. Now, in Cat Quest 3, he has apparently tricked the world into helping give him the third and final artifact that he needed to bring to pass the next part of his overarching plan.

What Happened To Captain Cappey In Cat Quest 3's True Ending

He Found His North Star

Close

Although Captain Cappey did die prior to the final boss fight, and his body lay dark and motionless, after the fight he speaks. In his last breaths, he tells the Cat that they were truly Captain Cappey's north star, and the two have an emotional moment in their goodbyes.

However, this is not the last of it. In the true ending of Cat Quest 3, although Aelius does take the North Star for himself, he uses it in an act of generosity to help the Hero first. Without saying anything about what he was doing, after he leaves, Captain Cappey magically returns to life, and all is good for the twosome again. Aelius is reprimanded by his other selves, to which he simply responds by stating that the love of family is possibly even more powerful than desire, and he wants to reunite a father and son.

Will The Next Game Bring The Apawcalypse?

How Many Cat Quest Games Will There Be?

Close

Now that Aelius has all three of the artifacts, the game ends on an ominous threat of him and his other selves gleefully exclaiming that they can now bring forth the Apawcalypse into the world. This is most likely a foreshadowing of what the next game, Cat Quest 4, will bring, as undoubtedly, the world will need a Hero to stand up against the powerful Aelius and save all mortality from destruction.

There could be more games before the Apawcalypse even takes place, though, as developers have said that they would ideally like to create a total of nine Cat Quest games, playing on the idea of cats having nine lives. An Apawcalypse sounds a bit final, however, so it will be exciting to see what the creative planners at The Gentlebros have up their sleeves. In the meantime, the ending of Cat Quest 3 leaves all on a bit of a cliffhanger.
