Summary Return to Moria will be available for Steam and Xbox Series X/S on August 27.

The Golden Update will bring new features to the game on all platforms, also releasing on August 27.

Sandbox Mode, crossplay, and a ton of other features will also be available with the release on Steam and Xbox Series X/S ports.

PlayStation and Epic Games players have had access to The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria since 2023, but the survival crafting game will officially be available to more players very soon. Return to Moria is the only game set in the Fourth Age of Middle-Earth, letting fans of the J.R.R. Tolkien franchise work with the Dwarves to take back their home under the Misty Mountains.

Those who have already played the game on its currently available platforms have admitted there are some learning curves that can make it difficult to get into, as well as some much-needed features players won't notice right away. But at this time, Return to Moria is one of the few games that allows players to explore the famous fantasy world at their own pace, while taking on some new adventures not depicted in the books or movies.

The Lord Of The Rings: Return To Moria Will Be Released For More Platforms August 27

Return to Moria was initially released for the Epic Games Store on October 23, 2023, with the title then releasing for the PlayStation 5 on December 5 of that same year. In a trailer showcasing the Golden Update on The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria's YouTube channel, the developers revealed that Return to Moria is coming to Steam and Xbox Series X/S on August 27. Technically, PC players can already play the game if they purchase it through the Epic Games Store, though those who have a preference for Steam will be able to add it to their Steam library very soon.

At this time, it does not seem as though the game will be made available for previous generation consoles, like the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Though the developers have been committed to bringing the game to more players as its user base grows, only current-generation consoles will have support for this Middle-earth title. Free Range Games has also not shared any plans to bring the game to Mac or Nintendo Switch.

The Lord Of The Rings: Return To Moria Price

The Price Has Not Been Posted On Steam & The Microsoft Store

Those who want to play Return to Moria on PlayStation 5 or the Epic Games Store can currently pick the title up for only $24.99 – a relatively cheap price, considering the cost of new video games in recent years. That said, though the title is currently available to wishlist on Steam, there is not a price posted. The title also currently is not available to wishlist on Xbox's Microsoft Store, though the description on the newest trailer reads that it's "coming soon!"

The developers have not announced that they will raise the price for the Xbox Series X/S and Steam editions of the game, so they are expected to remain the same. At this time, there also is not a preorder bonus for the Steam and Xbox versions of the game. Those looking to snag some additional goodies for purchasing the game in advance won't be able to do so with Return to Moria, though there is some new content coming to all platforms on August 27.

The Lord Of The Rings: Return To Moria Will Have Crossplay Support

Players Can Play With Friends Regardless Of Their Platform In August

In addition to Return to Moria getting a release date for Steam and Xbox Series X/S, crossplay support will also launch on August 27, according to the Golden Update trailer. Regardless of what platform players log in on, they'll be able to connect with each other, to build and adventure through Moria together. Steam players can host up to eight players in a single session, regardless of what platform the other players are joining from, while those starting a multiplayer session on another platform will be limited to four.

Though the details of the game's crossplay needs have not been disclosed just yet, it's likely players will have to create an account connected to the game's developer and link it to their copy of the game. Details will likely become available closer to the Golden Update's release in August.

Sandbox Mode Will Also Launch On August 27

Sandbox Mode Was Previously Exclusive To Epic Games Store Users

Like most survival games, Return to Moria will also have a Sandbox Mode available to all players, starting on August 27. This mode was previously only available in beta for those who purchased the game through the Epic Games Store, though Sandbox Mode 1.0 will be available along with the other features of the Golden Update. Players will be given access to new weapons and armor in Sandbox Mode, including the Wolf Skin Hat, Gondorian Shield, Khazad Halberd, and Barôkamlut. These can be brought over to campaign mode.

The nonlinear game mode lets players start a new world using various random seeds, making each sandbox playthrough a bit different from the last. Sandbox Mode will enable players who are familiar with either Return to Moria or other survival games to dive right into an original play experience free from the narrative built into the game's campaign. With this mode, players are free to explore the Misty Mountains and the lands underneath freely, experimenting with different weapons, armor, and buildings as they go.

Return To Moria Is Getting A Ton Of New Features

Alongside all of the above additions mentioned, the Golden Update is bringing with it a bunch of other changes to the game, extending beyond new platforms and crossplay support. Return to Moria will also get updated difficulty settings, allowing players to have more control over the aggression and frequency of various enemies and hordes they'll find throughout Middle-earth. The adjustments to the game's difficulty settings will also allow them to control world and mining drops and other survival features.

Buildings in Return to Moria will now also have a higher durability, making it easier for players to build bases wherever they choose. More than 100 new building parts and decorations have also been added, including rugs, banners, furnishings, light fixtures, and more. These items will give players more options than ever before to customize their bases in-game. Lastly, the much-requested ambient music soundtrack will also be added to the game.

Though Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria has received some mixed reviews since its release, the Golden Update promises some serious new additions to get players back into it. With crossplay support and new platforms added to the game's roster of features, there are plenty of ways for players to explore Middle-earth as a Dwarf in an original storyline not found in other Lord of the Rings media.
