Moana 2 Box Office Is Closing In On $1B After Passing Major Global Milestone

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.

Moana 2 has hit a staggering box office milestone as it swiftly approaches becoming a billion-dollar title. The animated movie is a sequel to Disney's 2016 hit and follows the title character (Auli'i Cravalho) embarking on her next adventure with the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) along with her new crew. The record-breaking Moana 2 release kicked off the day before U.S. Thanksgiving and quickly zoomed past the $643.3 million gross earned by the original movie.

Per Box Office Mojo, Moana 2 grossed $900.6 million worldwide by the end of 2024. This means that it has officially passed the $900 million milestone, becoming only the fourth movie of last year to have done so behind Despicable Me 4 ($969.1 million), Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.338 billion), and Inside Out 2 ($1.699 billion). It is currently projected to race past the $1 billion mark sometime in early 2025.

In addition to hitting this major milestone, Moana 2's domestic gross of $404 million means that it has now joined the Top 10 list of the highest-grossing domestic animated movies of all time, surpassing the $381.6 million gross of the previous No. 10 title, 2023's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

What This Means For Moana 2

It Will Continue To Climb The Chart

This new milestone proves that middling Moana 2 reviews have not prevented the movie from becoming a smash success. It also indicates the speed at which the movie is still rising, even more than a month into its theatrical release, as it had just passed the $850 million milestone worldwide several days beforehand. At this rate, it seems highly likely that the movie will cross the $1 billion milestone by the end of January.

Moana 2 has a 61% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which is just slightly over the 60% threshold at which a movie can be considered "Fresh" on the platform.

By crossing that coveted milestone, the movie will become only the fourth Walt Disney Animation Studios release to ever earn more than $1 billion, after Zootopia ($1.02 billion), Frozen ($1.29 billion), and Frozen II ($1.45 billion). It will also fall just below Zootopia to become the 13th highest-grossing animated movie of all time worldwide, rising six slots - past Shrek 2, Minions: The Rise of Gru, Finding Nemo, Despicable Me 4, Despicable Me 2, and 1994's The Lion King - from its current position at No. 19.
