The DC Universe Just Revealed Its New Batman

A new Batman has appeared for the first time, as the Dark Knight of James Gunn's DC Universe has debuted. The last couple of weeks saw a surge of Batman news. Those were related to the character's future in upcoming DC movies, both in the DCU and not. The Flash director Andy Muschietti will helm Batman's The Brave and the Bold movie, which should serve as the live-action debut of the DCU's Batman. Recently, Muschietti said that he is likely to work on another film before the Batman movie as the project had been delayed.

Alongside that reveal came news of another Batman movie suffering a delay. Robert Pattinson's The Batman - Part II has been moved to October 1, 2027, two years after the DC film's initial release date. The film could also reportedly get a new title. Due to the delays, speculation started to mount about how Gunn and The Batman franchise creator Matt Reeves could be working out a way to make Pattinson the Bruce Wayne of the DCU. However, a new release from the shared universe has revealed Batman's first canon appearance and effectively ended that speculation.

A First Look At Batman Came In The DCU's New Release

The Shared Universe's First Project Features The Dark Knight

While Batman's first live-action appearance in the DCU might be reserved for Andy Muschietti's The Brave and the Bold, the Dark Knight has already made his presence felt in a key way. James Gunn decided to start the DCU with Creature Commandos. The TV-MA animated series has a dark tone, with more mature themes and bloody violence than most superhero movies and shows. The project was perfect for complex characters to shine, and due to his connection to one of the main stars of the show, Batman made his DCU debut in Creature Commandos.

Every episode of the DC series has focused on a member of the team, showing their backstory. Creature Commandos episode 6 focused on Doctor Phosphorus, who is a Batman villain in the comics. The animated series showed how Doctor Phosphorus went from a human to a fiery skeleton, which included him killing Rupert Thorne and taking his place in Gotham City's criminal underworld. That led to Doctor Phosphorus landing on the Dark Knight's radar, with Batman making a cameo appearance in a flashback sequence. The hero finds Phosphorus' hideout and shows up ready to strike.

Everything Creature Commandos Reveals And Confirms About Batman

The DC Series Teases Many DCU Batman Elements

Close

While Ben Affleck is confirmed to be out as Batman, fans will have to wait longer to know who will play Bruce Wayne in the DCU. The reason for that is Batman does not speak in his Creature Commandos cameo. Instead, the character merely appears in the shadows as lightning strikes, evoking the imagery of the classic Batman: The Animated Series. Visually, Gunn has said that any heroes yet to be cast for the DCU who appear in Creature Commandos will not look exactly like they do in the series, but they should not be far off.

The DCU's Batman in Creature Commandos did not look similar to Robert Pattinson's from The Batman universe at all. As such, that is another nail in the coffin of that idea. Batman has a long cape, a utility belt, and he looks sturdier than Pattinson's leaner Batman. All of those aspects fit the more experienced Batman the DCU is seemingly going for, as Damian Wayne will be Robin in The Brave and the Bold, which asks for an older Bruce. Creature Commandos also cements that Batman is well-established in the DCU, and he was the one to apprehend Doctor Phosphorus.

Why The DCU Was Smart To Reveal Batman So Soon

Batman Beats Other Major DC Heroes In The DCU In A Key Way

While Batman's The Brave and the Bold movie is likely only coming in 2028 at the earliest due to The Batman - Part II's delay to 2027, the Dark Knight has now made history with his Creature Commandos cameo. Despite the role being brief, Batman is now the first major hero from the Justice League to appear in the DCU. David Corenswet's Superman, the new Wonder Woman, and plenty of other DC heroes — including Batman — appeared earlier in Creature Commandos as part of Circe's vision of a possible future where the Justice League was killed.

If Princess Ilana Rostovic is killed in Creature Commandos season 1's finale, then Circe's vision of her army killing the Justice League in the future should not come to pass.

However, since Circe's vision was described as only a possible future, which may not come to pass, Batman's episode 6 appearance is the only firm display of a major DCU hero in Creature Commandos. With Batman being perhaps the world's most popular superhero, the long wait for The Brave and the Bold could prove itself disappointing. However, by letting the Dark Knight make his DCU debut in the franchise's first project, James Gunn confirms to fans that he has not forgotten about Bruce Wayne and has plans in motion for Batman in the DCU.
