Dark Winds Season 3's New Characters Detailed By Showrunner

Dark Winds showrunner John Wirth discusses the crime drama's new characters. Returning to AMC and AMC+ on March 9, Dark Winds season 3 picks up the story six months after the season 2 finale. Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Chee (Kiowa Gordon) investigate the disappearance of two boys, but they have only an abandoned bicycle and some blood stains to rely on. The upcoming installment will also delve into life at the border and a potentially far-reaching drug conspiracy, with some familiar additions to the ensemble.

In an interview with TV Insider, Wirth revealed new details about the characters played by Dharma & Greg star Jenna Elfman and The Resident alum Bruce Greenwood. The showrunner shared that Elfman will play FBI Special Agent Sylvia Washington, with the Fear the Walking Dead alum stepping into the shoes of someone who's sent out to the reservation to close cases. As for Greenwood, who recently starred in The Fall of the House of Usher, he'll play an oil baron named Tom Spenser. Read the showrunner's full response below:

Jenna plays FBI Special Agent Sylvia Washington. She’s been sent to the reservation to “close up some old cases.” This dead-end assignment suits her as she at first comes across as harmlessly inept. But things get interesting when Special Agent Washington reveals herself to be a cunning investigator putting Leaphorn directly in her crosshairs. Bruce plays Tom Spenser, a New Mexico oil baron whose wells are running dry and has come up with a creative way to continue financing his empire.

What The New Cast Additions Mean For Dark Winds Season 3

There Are Several New Faces Joining The Ensemble

Elsewhere in the new season, Bernadette (Jessica Matten) attempts to adjust to life at the border. However, that becomes complicated for her when she finds herself in the middle of a drug-smuggling conspiracy. These new developments come alongside several other additions to the Dark Winds cast, including Raoul Max Trujillo, Tonantzin Carmelo, Alex Meraz, Terry Serpico, and Derek Hinkey in guest roles.

Dark Winds is based on the Leaphorn & Chee novels by Tony Hillerman, with George R. R. Martin and Robert Redford as executive producers.

The series is widening its scope, particularly after the impactful Dark Winds season 2 ending, though the show does have a clear advantage. Season 3 will consist of eight episodes, rather than the usual six. That means both Elfman and Greenwood could potentially have more room to tap into the ways their new characters contrast with how the main duo conducts their business and how their introductions might complicate things.

Our Take On The New Dark Winds Cast Additions

They Are Two Of The Best

Greenworld gave an excellent performance in Netflix's The Fall of the House of Usher, while Elfman has been a familiar television star for many since the late 1990s. Dark Winds is getting two pros that will elevate a show that is already considered one of the best crime dramas, with widespread praise for both seasons. With two extra episodes, season 3 may take the adaptation to new heights.
