Doctor Odyssey's First Returning Guest Star Can Finally Give Don Johnson's Massey The Arc He Needs

Although Doctor Odyssey is still only in its first season, the new series has garnered a reputation for featuring at least one big-name guest star per episode, and one of them will surprisingly return in a future episode. The ABC medical drama TV show created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, follows the medical professionals aboard the fictional luxury cruise ship The Odyssey. Almost every week, the cruise hosts new passengers (and new illnesses and ailments to deal with). Most of them are played by actors many will recognize in Doctor Odyssey.

Doctor Odyssey season 1 is set to return with episode 9 on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at 9 pm ET on ABC. Season 1 of Ryan Murphy's new series will reportedly have 18 episodes.

From Glee star Chord Overstreet to country music singer Kelsea Ballerini, Doctor Odyssey's guest star lineup is unmatched. It gives the TV series a leg up on its competitors and makes it stand out in the crowd. Plus, the famous guest actors and actresses pull in people who probably woudn't have watched Doctor Odyssey otherwise. Now, the ABC show is circling back to the cast of episode 2, "Singles Week," and bringing back one of the most impressive cameos.

According to TVLine, Shania Twain will reprise her role as Heather in the back-half of Doctor Odyssey season 1. This will be one of the first times a famous special guest star returns to the series. As some might recall, Twain's Heather is a widow who was a passenger during Singles Week in episode 2. Her granddaughter convinced her to do it, and once Heather set her sights on Don Johnson's Captain Robert Massey (also a widow), she didn't look back.

Heather and Captain Massey danced, flirted, and even met in his room, where he, unfortunately, suffered a cardiac event. Despite Captain Massey's broken heart, he and Heather parted on good terms (with a kiss) at the week's end. Now, Heather will return to The Odyssey and reunite with her former fling. It's unclear what brings Twain's character back to the ship, and fans must wait for Doctor Odyssey episode 9 in March 2025 to learn more.

Sparks Flew Between Captain Massey & Heather In Episode 2

Captain Massey hasn't had much to do in Doctor Odyssey so far (at least, compared to Joshua Jackson, Phillipa Soo, and Sean Teale's characters). He's one of the main characters and is seemingly an important presence on the show. However, Captain Massey's arc is lacking. So, Shania Twain returning as Heather will finally give Don Johnson's character the story he has needed and deserved since the premiere of Ryan Murphy's new show Doctor Odyssey.

Twain likely won't become a series regular in the Doctor Odyssey cast. However, that doesn't mean that her character can't be in a relationship with Captain Massey. He's the captain of a luxury cruise ship, after all. It would be difficult for Captain Massey to have a "normal," steady relationship with anyone. Perhaps Heather can come and go over the course of Doctor Odyssey, and she and Captain Massey can have a second chance at love (even though they won't see one another every week).

Only time will tell what the future holds for Heather and Captain Massey as a couple in Doctor Odyssey. She is likely returning to The Odyssey to see the captain, but perhaps a special week also entices her to take another ride on the ship. The ABC medical drama could feature another holiday-themed episode, with the characters celebrating Valentine's Day, resulting in Heather and Captain Massey embarking on a romantic week. Or the boat could host a decades-themed trip that draws Heather in. Whatever the case, the biggest draw for Heather to return in Doctor Odyssey is undoubtedly Captain Massey.
