"I Wish To Marry Him": Stardew Valley Fans Fall In Love With Ridiculous New NPC Added In Update 1.6
Stardew Valley players are falling in love with the most unlikely addition from the recent Update 1.6, the Trout Man. The latest update was released a few months ago for PC and came out on consoles and mobile in November 2024. It added a huge amount of new items, events, dialogue, various quality-of-life tweaks, and so much more. One of the features that the update introduced as a new event, the Trout Derby, and it's here that the enigmatic Trout Man can be found.
Trout Man has no name, or rather that is his name. "Where I come from," he says, "they call me 'Trout Man'." That's all it's taken for Reddit user and Stardew Valley fan painandstuttering to become intrigued by this mysterious fisherman who appears in town during the new Trout Derby event, a two-day festival that takes place in the summer. "I wish to marry him," says the Redditor. They go on to make a fish-themed innuendo, then add, "My dearest Trout Man, I need to know more about you."

Trout Man Has The Right Outlook On Life

The Trout Man only has three lines of dialogue, but these three lines tell players everything they need to know about him. He seems to have his whole life figured out, after apparently spending five years learning how to "think like a trout." The man follows the lifestyle of a trout, too: "Food, food, food, lay eggs, rest, eat more food." Or at least, he tries to, as he quite enjoys eating food but is "not so good at laying eggs, though."

Many of the comments in the Reddit discussion find the Trout Man hilarious, with GammaHunt jokingly declaring that "this is one of my favorite Stardew characters" and many other chiming in to say "same." However, the new character is not everyone's cup of tea. Reddit user AnOnlineHandle writes that they initially fell in love with the game for its "surprisingly deep and realistic" characters, so they have "mixed feelings about this sudden influx of absurdist joke characters."
However, others have noted that the new characters and their interactions are accurate to real life, especially for those who have worked in retail. GammaHunt once again came to the defense of the Trout Man and other characters like him that were added in Update 1.6. They write that in their opinion, "it brings more life into the game — obviously random people will come to the valley to experience what it has."
Our Take: The Amount Of Content And Depth In Stardew Valley Is Astounding
The Trout Man is just one tiny portion of the huge amount of content that was added to Stardew Valley in Update 1.6. Regardless of what players think of this particular character, there's no doubt that he and the other additions to the game add even more content and depth to an already robust game. Players are constantly discovering new details in the game, like the fact that the unpopular JojaMart run has hidden descriptions that most fans would never even see.
Stardew Valley was released an astounding eight years ago and it's still going strong, in part thanks to all that there is to discover in it. Not only is it still adding free updates, but it's also still achieving impressive milestones, including selling 41 million copies by the end of 2024. It looks like Stardew Valley will continue to be beloved by fans for many years to come, especially if it continues to introduce ridiculous and loveable characters like the Trout Man.
