Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury Is Getting the Spin Off of Our Dreams
While Mobile Suit Gundam is primarily known for its anime series, it has also spawned numerous successful manga adaptations. The latest addition to this iconic franchise continues the narrative of the most groundbreaking Gundam story to date: The Witch From Mercury anime series.
The official Witch of Mercury X account @G_Witch_M announced that a new manga series, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury - Youth Frontier, will premiere in Spring 2025. This is not a manga adaptation of the hit anime series, but a spin-off story focusing on the anime's main protagonists, Suletta Mercury and Miorine Rembran. However, unlike the anime that takes place at the Asticassia School of Technology, Youth Frontier will be set in a high school on Earth in Japan.
The New Witch From Mercury Manga Is Set to Explore a Crucial Aspect of the Original Series
The Relationship Between Suletta and Miroine Is a Key Element of the Story
While marketed as an "exciting story set in Japan’s near future", the series announcement left much of the plot shrouded in mystery. However, it did reveal the primary creative team, which is deeply rooted in the Witch From Mercury tradition. HISADAKE, who previously contributed to the Witch From Mercury anime in various roles, will write the series. The series will be exclusively published on Comic Newtype, a digital manga platform within Kadokawa Publishing's portfolio.
Specifically, Comic Newtype focuses on manga adaptations of anime, among other genres, making it a fitting home for this new series.According to a release from Comic Newtype, HISADAKE aims to use the story as a way to introduce readers to Japan’s diverse landmarks and points of interest.
The series will be illustrated by Hata Hiro, known for his work on the romantic comedy manga Misumi-san wa Misukasenai and the supernatural action thriller InuYuu, Dogs and Heroes Don't Dress Up. Although Hata has no prior connection to the Witch From Mercury anime, Comic Newtype reveals that he is a huge fan of the series. His enthusiasm for the project is evident, as he recently shared a pre-release image of the series stars - Suletta and Miorine - on his X account @manbou_ane, showcasing his excitement for the opportunity.
The Witch From Mercury Was One Of The Gundam Franchise's Most Innovative Series
The original Gundam: The Witch From Mercury anime debuted in October 2002 and ran for two seasons, concluding in July 2003. Even in a franchise packed with iconic moments, The Witch From Mercury stood out in several key ways. It was the first Gundam anime to feature a female lead protagonist. It also marked a groundbreaking milestone as the first Gundam series with LGBTQ protagonists, who ultimately marry at the series' conclusion.
These innovations, along with other creative departures from the traditional Gundam formula —such as Suletta having spent her entire life prior to the story's start without ever setting foot on Earth— make The Witch From Mercury one of the franchise's most compelling additions. The new manga series aims to continue this innovative trend. Unlike the original series, which primarily took place in space, the manga reimagines the cast as high school students on Earth. Only time will reveal how else the new Witch From Mercury manga will refresh the Gundam lore.
