Ark: Survival Ascended Astraeos Map Size Compared to Ragnarok

Ark: Survival Ascended Astraeos Map Size Compared to Ragnarok

Ark: Survival Ascended's Astraeos DLC adds a brand-new map to the game, and it's a big one. Astraeos is Ark's latest DLC, landing just about a month before the release of Ragnarok. Unlike other DLC released for the upgraded, Unreal Engine 5 version in recent days, Astraeos didn't originate as an official Ark: Survival Evolved DLC - it's totally original to Survival Ascended. Developed by Ark modding veteran Nekatus, who previously worked on Fjordur, Svartalfheim, and Valguero, it's ambitious and unique.

It's also noticeably bigger than most Ark DLC maps, although exactly how big is a bit more of a complicated question. Comparisons between other recent and upcoming Ark DLC like Ragnarok has been frequent, as have comparisons to maps generally considered to be some of Ark's largest DLC. Thankfully, some input from its creator

Ark: Survival Ascended's Astraeos Map Is Bigger Than Ragnarok

Or At Least It Will Be

While there's been some confusion about Astraeos' actual size, creator Nekatus was able to clear some things up in a comment on Reddit. In short, Astraeos has a total map size of 264 square kilometers (102 square miles), while Ragnarok comes in at 144 square kilometers (56 square miles), making Astraeos almost, but not quite, double the size of Ragnarok.

However, it's worth noting that Astraeos is being released piecemeal - at launch, only a small portion of the map (about 70 square kilometers, or 27 square miles), called Korinthos, was available for exploration. Although Nekatus has declined to give an exact release date for the next update to Astraeos, not wanting to set fans up for disappointment, the update is expected sometime this summer. It'll likely reveal a larger portion of Astraeos' map, although whether that'll be the entire rest of the 264 square kilometers or just another small slice remains to be seen.

Bigger Than Genesis 2, Fjordur

In fact, Astraeos will easily dwarf every other map for which we have similar dimensions - even those not yet released for Ark: Survival Ascended. Lost Island, one of the largest maps available, comes in at 150 square kilometers (58 square miles) - slightly bigger than Ragnarok, but far smaller than Astraeos.

Unfortunately, Genesis Part 2, generally considered the largest map for Ark, has yet to be measured in real-world units like square kilometers. This is likely due to its unique construction: it consists of two large rings stacked on top of one another, so it can be difficult to measure. However, Astraeos has frequently been touted as the biggest map for Ark to date, so it's likely that, if we could perform a side-by-side comparison, it'd still be bigger.

Genesis has yet to be ported over to ASA, but it's expected to arrive starting in April.

Even in its current state, though, Astraeos is pretty big - it's about double the size of The Island, and roughly as big as The Center. Still, it'll be incredible to explore once it's released in all its glory, and players can begin exploring its full, almost dauntingly large 264 square kilometers. For now, though, players will have to content themselves with what's already been released for Ark: Survival Ascended while they wait for that summer update.
