The Avengers Are About to Lose Their God-Tier Base to Some Very Underrated Villains
The Avengers’ newest base has been a major resource for the team, but a classic team of villains might be about to turn that advantage against the heroes. It is going to be a tough fight, with a single Avenger against an entire cadre of supervillains, but that’s never an excuse to count a Marvel hero out.
Marvel’s advanced solicitation for The Avengers #27 – written by Jed MacKay with art by Valerio Schiti – reveals that the newest incarnation of the classic villain team, the Masters of Evil, are set to take over the Avengers’ newest base from the inside.
The Avengers are currently operating from the Impossible City, a sentient city that doubles as a space station, which the team liberated from another group of villains earlier in the series. Now, it’s a more classic roster of baddies who are going to be commandeering the base, threatening one of the Avengers franchise's coolest new pieces of lore.

The Masters of Evil are among the longest-running Avengers’ villains, having first appeared in Avengers (Vol 1.) #6, written by Stan Lee, with art by Jack Kirby. The team usually consists of broad villainous parallels to the Avengers, but has had so, so many iterations that it’s not even worth listing the various members. This new roster includes the villains Madcap, Mister Hyde, Dreadknight, Exerminatrix and the Mad Thinker – and according to Marvel’s synopsis for Avengers #27, they are already lurking within the Impossible City, waiting to strike out at Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
The teaser for Avengers #27 reads:
While T’Challa was away, the Masters of Evil were at play! With the rest of the Avengers tied up with Doctor Doom, the Masters of Evil have been plotting the downfall of the Avengers…from the inside! Can Black Panther’s return turn the tide?
This new roster isn’t to be trifled with, and the comic’s about to prove it. It will be up to Black Panther, who was away on a solo mission, to stop the entire team, who have apparently managed to incapacitate every other Avenger in that time, including heavy hitters like Storm, Captain Marvel and Scarlet Witch. This is a classic superhero team book scenario. Of course, it’s going to be up to the character who has the ‘weakest’ powers to fight against the entire villain team and outsmart them.
The Masters Of Evil's Attack Proves The Downside Of The Avengers' Impressive "Impossible City" Base
The Ashen Combine Could Return
The Masters of Evil’s attack was foreshadowed in Avengers #11 – written by MacKay, with art by Ivan Fiorelli – when Mad Thinker staged an attack on the Impossible City with the goal of mapping it, in the process learning where the city's previous masters, the extradimensional villains known as the Ashen Combine, were imprisoned. The Masters of Evil are one thing, but the Ashen Combine are far more dangerous. Yes, the Avengers defeated them, but the world-conquering villains won’t make the same mistakes twice. If the Masters of Evil break them out, the Avengers could be truly overwhelmed.
The Avengers (2023) #27 will be available June 18, 2025 from Marvel Comics.
