Champions vs New Champions Kicks Off a Civil War for a Whole New Generation
Warning: Contains Potential Spoilers for New Champions #3!
Two of Marvel’s youngest hero teams are about to go to war, as a new preview officially teases the battle between the Champions and the revamped version of the team. Led by Ms. Marvel, the Champions, who debuted in 2016, became the most popular version of the team, but the New Champions have arrived to shake things up in the universe and go toe-to-toe with those that came before them.
The preview for New Champions #3–written by Steve Foxe, with art by Ivan Fiorelli–officially pits the members of the New Champions against the previous generation for reasons that are still unknown before release. However, the preview shows the two groups trading insults before lining up and engaging in an all-out brawl.

The 2016 version of the team eventually proved themselves as a worthy group of teen heroes capable of taking on the Marvel Universe’s greatest threats. However, the new iteration of the Champions for the 2020s is making the previous team seem completely obsolete. Despite the 2016 roster featuring heavy-hitters like Ms. Marvel, Spider-Man, Nova, Viv Vision, and Amadeus Cho’s Brawn, the New Champions are quick to assert their belief that they are the superior team. With no hesitation, they label the previous generation as “irrelevant” and “outdated.”

Back in New Champions #1 by Foxe, Fiorelli, and Ig Guara, the brand-new team made some slight jabs at other iconic hero teams during their very first mission, including both the Young Avengers and the previous iteration of the Champions. However, it still seems unlikely that either version of the team would suddenly have a major disagreement or try to violently resolve things with a massive brawl against their fellow heroes. With the villainous Magneto-like character Magnetrix watching the fight go down and remarking “this is sick”, it seems that she might be behind the fight in some sinister way.

Do the New Champions Need to Fight to Prove Themselves?
Regardless of how the fight plays out in New Champions #3, the battle is still a pivotal moment for fans of either version of the team. As the New Champions hold their own against the popular members of the previous lineup, they have a chance to further establish themselves as major players in the Marvel Universe, earning the same recognition as Kamala Khan or Miles Morales. However, in the war between the Champions—which could lead to their first team-up if all goes well—the newest heroes will truly have to prove themselves against their powerful predecessors.
From the core four members of the New Champions to the team’s recent additions, these new heroes boast extraordinary powers and fighting styles that are still being shaped. Now, they have the opportunity to test their strength and control over their abilities in a clash with their peers in the superhero community. But after insulting some of the universe’s most powerful teen heroes, the New Champions might need to learn a lesson in respecting their slightly older elders. As Marvel teases a war between the Champions, only the victorious team can truly claim the title.
New Champions #3 will be available on March 19, 2025, from Marvel Comics!
