Honkai Star Rail 3.1's Newest Character Proves Berserk Truly Inspires Everything

The newest character in Honkai: Star Rail 3.1, Mydei, has just proved that Kentaro Miura’s Berserk truly has an all-reaching breadth of inspiration. The turn-based RPG by HoYoverse is currently in the midst of Version 3.1, a patch that has already added Tribbie to the playable roster, and is just about to introduce Mydei, a 5-star Imaginary character on the Path of the Destruction. The character is expected to be a powerful DPS as Mydei’s build in Honkai: Star Rail revolves around him consuming a portion of his large Max HP pool in exchange for more damage output against enemies.

This article contains spoilers for Berserk’s Golden Age Arc.

Mydei had already been presented in Version 3.0 but as an NPC. Over the past two updates, his role in the story of Amphoreus grew and players were given some insight into how he operates amidst the other Chrysos Heirs. Mydei is the inheritor of the Nikador’s Coreflame of Strife, which reflects on his own personality. Now, players will finally be able to control Mydei in combat and use him as their main damage dealer. His damage-dealing status as a playable character is no coincidence, as it is infused with his very essence as an NPC in Honkai: Star Rail.

Mydei's New Trailer In Honkai: Star Rail Shows The Trial For Nikador's Coreflame

The Video Depicts A Tragic Battle

Ahead of his release in the game, the developer released a new character trailer for Mydei, showcasing a portion of his history. During the video, players can witness Mydei and his legion of Amphoreus soldiers heading to an arena to face Nikador, from where he intends to retrieve the Coreflame of Strife. The teaser trailer shows Mydei and his troops facing several Titankin enemies. During the ensuing combat, Mydei is seen being targeted and hit by several attacks, be they ranged arrows or melee swords. Despite it all, Mydei pulls together and continues to charge forward in the battle.

The video was shared on the official Honkai: Star Rail channel on YouTube.

Even though Mydei does resist the blows, he witnesses his troops decimated in the battle. This, in fact, is what gives him the motivation and fury to power through the Titankin enemies all the way to the Strife Titan from Amphoreus. Using a newfound power, stemmed in his rage, Mydei makes his way to Nikador and eliminates the Lance of Fury with a memorable attack and a gruesome finishing move. At the end, he stands at the Titan’s throne with Nikador’s head in his hands, proclaiming that he is now the embodiment of Strife in Amphoreus in Honkai: Star Rail.

Mydei's Battle In Honkai: Star Rail Resembles Berserk's Eclipse Saga

The RPG Seems To Draw Inspiration From Kentaro Miura’s Work

Close

The video alone is epic and contains elements that positively please any Mydei fans, but there is a lot more to it: Mydei’s trailer seems to draw heavy inspiration from Berserk’s renowned Eclipse saga during the Golden Age Arc. There are several elements in the video that resemble the events that occur during this storyline. The first of them is the place in which the conflict takes place. The video starts showing Mydei and his troops facing a threat represented by a dark mass covering the sun, which turns the entire arena red, much like the eclipse does in Berserk.

The Honkai: Star Rail trailer also portrays an oppressing battle in an area where death is a constant. Mydei’s companions can be seen slaughtered by the waves of Titankin, much like how the Band of the Falcon was decimated upon entering the darkened arena during the fateful eclipse. Like Guts, Mydei also sees his companions fall, one after another, by the hands of the legions of something more powerful; in Guts’ case, the Band of the Falcon is devastated by the demons spawned by the God Hand, while Mydei’s companions fall at the hands of the Titankin summoned by Nikador.

There even seems to be a reference to the Brand of Sacrifice in the new trailer featuring Mydei. During the battle, Nikador talks to Mydei, mentioning that “the day will come when your back bears the mark of your demise.” This seems to be a gentle nod to the mark that Guts carries on his neck after Griffith sacrifices him and the Band of the Falcon to ascend and become Femto. In the game, Mydei’s equivalent could be the Coreflame of Strife. This gives him the power to let his fury flow and ultimately defeat Nikador with all his might.

Of course, Guts does not defeat his foes during the Eclipse storyline in Berserk, but is set on his path for vengeance.

There are, of course, obvious differences between both characters; the most significant of which lie in their designs. While both are men who boast physical strength and nearly supernatural resilience, Mydei is more of a brawler, while Guts is known for wielding his estimated 400-pound Dragon Slayer sword. They fight differently and ultimately look differently, too, as Mydei has medium golden hair whereas Guts has short black hair. While they are indisputably different characters, Mydei in Honkai: Star Rail may have been partially inspired by Guts from Berserk.

Mydei's Rage In Honkai: Star Rail Could Be Inspired By Gut's Power

Both Characters Seem To Draw Their Strength From Similar Places

There is an uncanny similarity between the rage that Mydei boasts and the source of Gut’s power. In the trailer, Mydei had to withstand not only a tough battle but watch his companions fall. Near the end of the video, his anger seems to be a fuel that allows him to unlock more strength and resilience to continue fighting, perhaps in an attempt to avenge the fallen and honor what they lived for. Guts is not so different. Berserk’s protagonist is by no means a hero, but he does seem driven by similar ideals as the Honkai: Star Rail character.

During the Eclipse storyline, Guts had to witness the majority of his companions be killed by a traitor he once saw as a friend and terrible events involving Casca. Guts suffers life-threatening injuries during the Eclipse and even loses his left arm, all while pushing himself to the limit to challenge the demons and the God Hand that had done him wrong. This type of behavior seems to inspire Mydei, but to a more controlled and likely censored effect, as what happens in Berserk could not possibly occur in the age 12+ rated Honkai: Star Rail.

Dark fantasy games from around the world, including Dark Souls, The Witcher, Final Fantasy, and Blasphemous have all been inspired by Kentaro Miura’s work in one way or another, and it seems like even HoYoverse’s turn-based RPG has been influenced, even if limited to the microcosm of one character. Even so, it is exciting to see a character like Mydei in Honkai: Star Rail carry so many traits that resemble Guts from Berserk and still make it out to be his own character with his individual characteristics.
