The New Power Rangers Team is Here, as The 'Infinity Force' Makes Its Franchise Debut (Exclusive)

Summary Power Rangers Infinity introduces a new team, the ragtag Infinity Force, facing off against a D-list villainess in a fun departure from high-stakes drama.

The comic will be released on August 21, and combines the creative talents of Sam Humphries and Brandt & Stein for a unique addition to the Power Rangers universe.

Fans can look forward to a different tone and vibe with Power Rangers Infinity, offering a fresh take on the franchise's traditional storytelling style.

An all-new Power Rangers team is set to debut as the franchise introduces fans to the ragtag Infinity Force. Last month, BOOM! Studios announced that the main Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic series will be ending this year following its final arc. Coinciding with the latest television season speculated to mark the end of the show as we know it, the fate of the franchise has been left in the air.

Thankfully, fans can rejoice as a new hope arrives in the form of Power Rangers Infinity, the next comic one-shot from BOOM! Studios in collaboration with Hasbro. Power Rangers Infinity will combine the creative stylings of DC superstar Sam Humphries (Green Lanterns, Harley Quinn) and acclaimed artist team Brandt & Stein (Crowded). The main cover art for Power Rangers Infinity #1 by Paulina Ganucheau can be viewed below, with additional variant covers by Brandt & Stein, Goñi Montes, and Sweeney Boo found further below.

BOOM! Studios' advanced solicitations and words from the creators suggest that Infinity will be a fun departure from MMPR's high-stakes melodrama.

A New One-Shot for the Comic Franchise

Close

Power Rangers Infinity will follow the formation of the Infinity Force, "a ragtage team of off-kilter rangers from across the Grid." Led by a diehard Power Rangers fangirl named Lola, the Infinity Force "must come together to face off against the mildly dangerous D-list villainess Poisandra who has managed to snake her way across the fragile multiverse." In anticipation of Power Rangers Infinity, the BOOM! Studios annoucement included word from the book's writer, Sam Humphries:

Fans are already saying that out of all the Power Rangers comic books that reference hockey goalies AND Jane Austen, Power Rangers Infinity is the greatest of all time. I’m truly honored, and I absolutely couldn't have done it without Ted and Ro. Not only is their art hilarious and heartbreaking, but they never once said it shouldn’t be done. Not one time!

If the sarcasm wasn't evident, readers aren't going to find any Power Rangers comic books that reference hockey goalies or Jane Austen (maybe one, but not both). However, that's as good a sign as any that Humphries is crafting a truly unique addition to the Power Rangers lexicon. For a franchise that has existed for more than 30 years, it's important to offer something audiences haven't seen before. That's a tall task, but introducing new elements like Austen is a good start.

To further hint at what's to come, BOOM! also quoted Power Rangers Infinity's artist duo, Brandt & Stein:

It was an honour to be asked to contribute to the Power Rangers mythos, but Sam’s story made it a delight. A story of triumph and the washed-up dregs of aborted teams and more heart than it could reasonably lay claim to? How on earth could we say no to that? Now give us that Peggy spinoff!

Brandt & Stein's contribution to the Power Rangers mythos hints at a story that embodies the key story elements that have come to define the franchise in recent memory (particularly in the comics, specifically multiverse stories like Shattered Grid) but with a tone that bridges a completely different atmosphere.

The Perfect Follow-Up (and Counterpart) to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Now For Something Completely Different

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic series excelled at high-stakes melodrama, and while that drama made the comics gripping, Power Rangers Infinity is opting for something different, tone-wise. While Shattered Grid was a massive team-up event combining Rangers from across the multiverse against the biggest threat the franchise ever faced, Infinity brings together a team of D-list multiversal misfits who are practically unqualified to be Rangers, facing an equally D-list villain. The stakes are lower, but lower stakes leave room for fun instead of melodrama. Something different like the Infinity Force is the best way to follow up the concluding ongoing Power Rangers series.

Power Rangers Infinity #1 will be available August 21 from BOOM! Studios.
