Black Lantern Ventriloquist Was A Nightmare Image Readers Can't Unsee

Blackest Night: Batman #2 – By Peter J. Tomasi, Aroian Syaf, Vicente Cifuentes, Nei Ruffino, & John J. Hill.

Arnold Wesker was a man with a dual personality. One part of him was the harmless Arnold, who couldn't hurt a fly, while the other was the brutal mobster Scarface. Wesker often claimed that it was Scarface who forces him to commit the crimes that he did, even going so far as claiming to just be a hostage of Scarface. While this clearly wasn't true, it made Wesker easy to deal with if he was simply separated from Scarface. But when he was returned as a Black Lantern, this became completely impossible, and utterly terrifying.

Black Lanterns can make constructs just like every Lantern can, and Wesker put this to great effect by creating construct versions of Scarface. While Scarface was always dangerous, due to his very real gun, he was just a ventriloquist's doll, and could easily be mitigated by taking him away from Wesker. The same can't be said for the Black Lantern variant. Scarface nearly indestructible in this form, and Wesker was able to have multiple Scarfaces, as demonstrated during an attack on the Gotham Police Department where Wesker created four separate Scarfaces to massacre the police.

The least intimidating villain can truly become a major problem with just one vital power upgrade. That's how the Ventriloquist went from being Batman's worst villain to his outright scariest during Blackest Night.

Blackest Night Made Batman's Least Respected Villain A Real Threat

Scarface Became Too Real

Despite having a pretty good gimmick as a Batman rogue, Wesker has never gotten any respect. The Joker named Ventriloquist the worst villain in Gotham. It's no surprise that people thought little of him, when Wesker's power was focused entirely in his doll. However, after being revived as a Black Lantern, Wesker was easily capable of taking on the entire Gotham City Police Department. It goes to show that the least intimidating villain can truly become a major problem with just one vital power upgrade. That's how the Ventriloquist went from being Batman's worst villain to his outright scariest during Blackest Night.
